New Rider Course

The Harley-Davidson Riding Academy offers a comprehensive motorcycle training program designed to improve physical and mental skills for active, licensed riders. The program is based on the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) curriculum and includes both classroom and range instruction from state and MSF certified coaches. The course covers various topics, including motorcycle controls, riding gear, and safety procedures. Students will learn how to properly start and shut off the motorcycle, move it from point A to point B, and perform basic maneuvers. The course also emphasizes the importance of wearing proper safety equipment, including helmets, gloves, and protective clothing. The training program is divided into two days on the range, with each day focusing on different skills such as starting and stopping, turning, and braking. On the first day, students will focus on classroom sessions to discuss behaviors and self-assessment. On the second day, students will focus on cornering, swerving, and maximum braking. The course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to ride a motorcycle safely and confidently. By the end of the course, students will be able to start and shut off the motorcycle properly, perform basic maneuvers such as turning and stopping, understand the importance of wearing proper safety equipment, and follow traffic laws and use hand signals effectively. The course includes a variety of materials, including a roadbook, a Harley-Davidson Journal, and protective gear. The instructors are experienced trainers who will provide guidance and support throughout the course, helping students to develop their skills and confidence. The Advanced Rider Course (ARC) focuses on improving a rider's capabilities related to overall safety awareness, maneuvering skills, cornering techniques, and emergency maneuvers. The Adventure Rider Course aims to provide fundamental knowledge and skill for licensed riders with an ADV motorcycle. To participate in the ARC or Adventure Rider Course, riders must possess a valid motorcycle endorsement or license, have a well-maintained and properly operating motorcycle, and meet specific safety gear requirements. The course is designed to educate riders on essential skills, safety awareness, and risk management techniques. The training program consists of classroom sessions and on-range activities, which cover behavioral aspects of riding, self-assessment, and risk management. On-range activities focus on improving riding skills, including cornering techniques, emergency maneuvers, and overall safety awareness. Successful completion of the Advanced Rider Course or Adventure Rider Course earns riders an MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) Advanced Rider Card. This certification provides benefits such as improved riding skills and safety awareness, enhanced risk management techniques, increased confidence on the road, and eligibility for motorcycle endorsement or license in some states. The Adventure Rider Course is designed for licensed riders who have an ADV motorcycle. The course aims to provide fundamental knowledge and skill for riding ADVs on unpaved surfaces. Students will learn basic off-pavement skills such as standing postures for straight-line riding, turning, and tighter turns, and complex off-pavement skills such as rear-wheel steering, crossing over obstacles, irregular terrain, and riding on hills. The course is an excellent primer for those interested in a full off-road training experience. Graduates will have learned and practiced the basics of handling an ADV touring type motorcycle in off-road conditions, setting them up for success in more advanced training opportunities.
