Australia Motorcycle Driver’s License
Being able to explore Australia by motorcycle is an exciting prospect. You will have the freedom to ride a motorcycle and experience the thrills of traveling the open roads from Sydney to Perth. However, in order to operate a motorcycle in Australia, it is best that you have a motorcycle driver’s license.
Basic Requirements for the License
To obtain a motorcycle license in Australia, applicants must be at least 16 years old and should apply first for an R-E learner’s permit. To get a learner’s permit, you have to attend the RiderSafe training course which offers basic training course. It is a pre-license training course that teaches the basic and advanced skills you need to learn in order to ride a motorcycle safely on the road.
Enrolling for a learner’s permit is the first step to obtain a motorcycle license in Australia. To apply for a basic training course applicants must hold a current driver’s license. Applicants who don’t have a current driver’s license must pass the theory test. The RiderSafe training course is available at:
- St Agnes
- Murray Bridge
- Millicent
- Barmera
- Port Pirie
- Whyalla
After you successfully finished the RiderSafe basic training course, present your certificate at any Service SA customer service centrethen apply for a learner’s permit which is valid for two years.

Obtaining a motorcycle learner’s permit is the second step to fully obtain your motorcycle license and the permit will allow you to start motorcycle driving lessons. You can practice driving a motorcycle under the supervision of a licensed riding instructor who holds a similar or higher license than the license in which you are applying. If you are learning how to drive a moped, you can learn with someone who has held an R-N, R or C class license for two years. Carry this permit at all times while riding.
Motorcycle Safety Training Course
After you have your learner’s permit, the next step is to enroll for a RiderSafe advanced training course. After the completion of the advanced training course, you will be ready to apply for an R-Date License by presenting your certificate of competency at any Service SA customer service centre . If you already hold a driver’s license, the R-Date motorcycle class permit will be added to it. However, if you don’t hold a driver’s license but have held a motorcycle learner’s permit for a year and are at least 17 years old, then you can apply for provisional licenses which limits you to riding a learner approved motorcycle only. If you are applying for an R-D license, you need to take the theory test and road skills test which consists of 30 multiple choice questions and should get at least 24 correct answer in order to pass the test. The theory test is consisting of 15 multiple choice questions and you should get at least12 or more score in order to pass the test.
After riding on a restricted R-date license for 12 months, you can apply for an unrestricted R-class license. This license will allow you to ride a motorcycle of any power. Once you have your motorcycle driver’s license in hand, you are now ready to hit the open road of Australia.
