Basic Requirements for the License

To apply for a motorcycle driver’s license, you have to get first a learner’s permit at any Ohio Department of Public Safety. You need to be at least 15 ½ years old and must get a learner’s permit by following this process:
  • Study and review a copy of the Motorcycle Operation Manual as well as the Ohio Digest of Motor Vehicle Laws Handbook.
  • Once you are ready to take the exam, head to a driver’s license exam station and take the written test. Take the vision test. Both tests are free to take and no appointment is necessary. Be sure to bring with you the important proof of identification to prove your name, age and social security number.
  • Go to the deputy registrar’s office with the documents you used for the exam to receive your temporary packet for $22.
  • If you are younger than 18 years old, bring a parent or guardian to sign the necessary papers.
  • Then you will get your permit that is valid for one year and you have to follow all the restrictions that come with it.

    • To get a motorcycle permit, applicants who are over 18 years old can take a motorcycle skills test by following this process:
    • Making an appointment with a driver’s license exam station.
    • Bring your motorcycle, helmet and eye protection to the station during the day of the exam.
    • After passing the test, the examiner will fill out and validate the blue print from your packet then bring this or a driver’s license to a deputy registrar’s office.
    • After you paid the necessary fee, you will get your motorcycle driver’s license or endorsement. This will be valid for four years and will expire on your birthday.
The State of Ohio requires all applicants for a motorcycle driver’s license to pass a written motorcycle knowledge test about the traffic signs, motor vehicle laws and safe driving techniques. If you choose to take the Basic Rider Course offered by Motorcycle Ohio, you will be exempted from the riding exam. However, you have to compete and pass the course to get your course completion card. The Motorcycle Safety Course

The State of Ohio recommends motorcycle training for both beginners and experienced motorcycle riders to learn more about motorcycle operation and help reduce the risk of riding. Once you met all the licensing requirements, you will be given a motorcycle driver’s permit or endorsement. You are then free to ride and operate a motorcycle anywhere in Ohio.
