According to the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) , any person who is at least 16 years old and want to operate a motorcycle must apply for a Class M permit or a motorcycle endorsement on your Massachusetts non-commercial Class D motor vehicle license. You can apply for a motorcycle license and permit at any RMV full service office in Massachusetts.

Basic Requirements for the License

Applying for a Massachusetts motorcycle permit is similar to applying for a non-commercial (Class D) permit. You need to be a resident of Massachusetts and should be at least 16 years old and with a parental consent or signature on the application form should follow these steps:
  • Get a permit application form from the nearest Massachusetts RMV office.
  • Documents proving your full name and date of birth.
  • Social Security number that the RMV can verify with the US Social Security Administration as having been issued to you.
  • Take your application form to a nearby RMV office along with your $ 30 fee and the proper ID. If you have a valid MA driver’s license and only want to add a motorcycle endorsement, the fee will be $15. The written tests are given on a walk-in basis therefore you have to study the motorcycle manual before head to the RMV office.
  • Pass the written exam by getting at least 18 correct answers out of 25 questions.
  • Pass the required eye exam.

Note: All documents must be originals. Your right to operate will be verified through the Commercial Driver License Information System and by the National Driver Register.

Applicants of motorcycle instruction permit who are 18 years old or older must present the following:
  • Documents proving your date of birth
  • Documents proving your signature
  • Documents proving your Massachusetts residency
  • Social Security Number
  • Pass the vision screening test
  • Pass the written exam
All documents should be originals. No photocopies are accepted and you must pay the required fees. Upon completion of the aforementioned prerequisites, you will be a proud owner of a Massachusetts motorcycle learner’s permit. The permit is valid for two years but not renewable. The Massachusetts motorcycle permit holder is free to practice driving a motorcycle without direct supervision of licensed driver. However, you need to carry your permit with you all the time while on the motorcycle and should wear an approved helmet and other safety gear.
