Kansas Motorcycle Driver’s License

Kansas Motorcycle Driver's License
Under the guidelines of Kansas DMV, anyone who wanted to drive or operate a motorcycle must have a Class M motorcycle license or a motorcycle instruction permit. You can apply for a motorcycle permit and license at any DMV office in Kansas. However, you must first have a driver’s license in order to apply for a motorcycle endorsement. Applicants of a motorcycle instruction permit must be at least 16 years old and should complete the following requirements:
  • Complete the application form and submit the original copy in person.
  • Pay the application fee
  • Provide acceptable proof of identity.
  • Pass the vision test
  • Pass the written examination
Also, the Kansas DMV will require you to provide acceptable proof of identity during your application therefore you have to bring the following documents:
  • Original Birth certificate issued in any state
  • Parental consent form for 18 years old and below.
  • Driver’s license or instruction permit issued in another state
  • US passport
  • US military ID card
  • Kansas ID card
  • Social security number
Once you complete the prerequisites given above, you will be given a learner’s permit that will allow you to practice driving a motorcycle. However, the instruction permit will not allow you to drive on the highway, drive during the evening and to carry any passengers. Once you are confident to take the road skills test, contact your local DMV office to schedule the test. During the skills test, you will be tested on your basic vehicle control and ability to avoid crashes. It will determine your ability to handle normal and hazardous situations. The skills test will determine your abilities such as:
  • Ability to adjust speed depending on the traffic situation
  • Ability to stop, turn and swerve
  • Ability to make critical decisions then execute them
  • Knowledge of the motorcycle and riding limitations
  • Ability to communicate well with other drivers
  • Ability to choose the correct path and stay within boundaries.
Passing the motorcycle skills test will be your last step in getting a motorcycle driver’s license or motorcycle endorsement on your current driver’s license. But like most state, Kansas will waive your skills test and issue you a motorcycle license (Class M) if you successfully completed a state-approved basic motorcycle rider safety course. The courses last anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks and include classroom instruction. It also offers a driver training in a controlled, 0ff-street environment. Once you successfully completed this course, you will be eligible for a motorcycle driver’s license without having to undertake the Kansas road test. Now that you have your motorcycle driver’s license or endorsement, you may ride your motorcycle anywhere in the state as long as you have your motorcycle is properly registered with the Kansas DMV and you have adequate insurance.
