New Jersey Motorcycle Driver’s License

All residents of New Jersey that operate a motorcycle must have a separate motorcycle driver’s license or qualification on their existing driver’s license. A motorcycle endorsement on your driver’s license will indicate that you are licensed to drive a motorcycle. However, in order to get a motorcycle driver’s license, you are required to get a motorcycle permit first.

Basic Requirements for the License

To get a motorcycle permit in New Jersey, applicants must:

• • Be at least 17 years old.
  • Complete and pass the application permit from the MVC Agency.
  • Pass the 6 Point ID Verification.
  • Pay the required fees.
  • Pass the written and vision test to validate your permit.
  • Pass the road test.
  • Apply for a motorcycle permit at your local Motor Vehicle Agency.
  • Pass the knowledge and vision tests.
  • Set up appointment for the road test at your local MVC.
  • Pay the required fees.
  • Be at least 17 years old. Applicant’s less than 18 years old must have a parent or guardian’s permit.

The holders of a motorcycle permit are restricted to:

• • Operate a motorcycle from one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise.
  • Ride on any state toll road or limited-access highway.
  • Carry passengers.

You should be under the direct supervision of a New Jersey licensed motorcyclist on a separate motorcycle. After passing the road test, take your permit, ride slip and score sheet to the New Jersey MVC to get your license.

Avoiding the Skills Test

If you don’t want to take the road test, you have to take the Motorcycle Safety Education Program Basic Rider Course. Anyone who is under 18 years old is also required to take the Basic Rider Course. After the completion of the course, you have to provide the testing center with:

• 6 Point ID Verification.
• Completion card from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.
• Waiver Certification Form.
• Stamped Permit.

Applicants will fail the road test for the following reasons:

• You did not have enough practice.
• You lack knowledge about motorcycle driving.
• Your face shield or goggles are not approved by the MVC.
• You don’t wear a helmet.
• You don’t have the exact equipment according to state regulations.

To get a motorcycle endorsement for your existing driver’s license, applicants must:

• Be at least 17 years old and have a parent or guardian consent.
• Pay the required fee.
• Pass the vision test.
• Provide proof of identification by passing the 6 Point ID Verification.
• Bring course completion documents to any driver testing center.

Upon completion of all the licensing requirements, you will be eligible to get a motorcycle driver’s license or endorsement permit on your current driver’s license. However, basic auto license holders can operate a low-speed motorcycle without any endorsement or separate motorcycle driver’s license. A low-speed motorcycle is less than 50cc however; they may not be driven on any toll road, limited-access highway or public roads with a posted speed limit greater than 35 miles per hour.
